With extensive use of Cor-Ten (weathering steel) this home in Byron Bay embraces modern trends in finishes. The other construction materials were purposely kept neutral to allow the rusting steel to “pop”. Natural blockwork, grey powder-coated steel and aluminium, and various grey painted fibre-cement walls, all work together to create a striking appearance. External patios and walkways were finished in washed aggregate concrete, using Holcim’s “Lighthouse White” aggregate.

Internally the theme of neutral background with feature materials and finishes continues with the floors being honed concrete with the same aggregate colour. The walls were exposed blockwork or painted plasterboard.

The ceilings on the upper level were a series of waves lined in Tasmanian Oak that had been specially moulded in a “bell and cove” profile to allow the boards to follow the curve of the ceilings. These curves were first plotted on the wall and the coordinates entered into our cabinetmakers CNC flatbed cutter. This allowed the ribs that support the lining boards to be cut exactly the same to ensure a smooth curve. The Tassie Oak was also used on the stairs, veneered doors and architrave-free jambs, and add a warm contrast to the bare blockwork and concrete floors.

Feature tiles were used in the bathrooms to create a splash of colour.

A wine cellar was one of the first parts of the construction process and took the form of a specially converted water tank sunk into the ground with the house being built on top of it. Access was provided through a daybed situated over the stairs.

Extensive use of louvre screens provides privacy from, and for, the neighbours. These were specially manufactured in aluminium and powder-coated. They hide the external stairs to the rooftop observation deck that affords views up Byron’s beaches and west to the hinterland.

The roof surface is a PVC membrane that allows the whole area to act as a water catchment and gutter system. This means that troublesome box gutters could be avoided and provides easy access to the roof area.
